Louis Armstrong discusses his love for music and his run in with Al Capone
Original was signed by Louis Armstrong after the show
The one, the only, Louis.
There is a wonderful story when he played, for the first time, in 1956, with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Phiharmonic at Lewison Stadium, which, at that time, was their outdoor summer venue, Lenny introduced Louis as follows, " Louis Armstrong has told me that his most honored ambition is being fulfilled tonight in playing with the New York Philharmonic. I should say that is rather we on the long-haired side of the fence who are honored, in that when we play the "St. Louis Blues," we are only doing a blown-up imitation of what he does, and what he does is real and true and honest and simple, and even noble." Louis replied, "I'd like to say thanks very much to Mr. Boin-steen, and, uh, this is my first time playing with a symphony orchestra, and as we cats say, it gassed me, man, it gassed me!" The audience went crazy. After they finished Lenny and Louis had to fake an encore, repeating the coda of the arraingment.
